MOHAMMED Fahim Maan sees himself as more of a bowler but his batting also shone through as Evesham completed their best season for some time.

The Vale club have crashed down from Birmingham and District Premier League Division One to Worcestershire League Division Two in consecutive campaigns with four relegations since 2011.

But Evesham have finally stabilised after their spectacular fall from grace with a mid-table seventh-placed finish and can now look forward with optimism to bidding for a return to the county top flight next year.

They showed their potential by powering to a 101-run success at top-five side Feckenham in the final game of the season with Fahim Maan smashing 136 runs and taking 4-23 from 11 overs.

The 27-year-old, one of a number of Evesham players recruited from the Birmingham area, saw his efforts land the Worcester News player of the week award and a £25 Fearnley Factory Shop voucher.

Ten-man Evesham, captained by Sajjad Khan, scored 290-9 from 48.2 overs with Fahim Maan stepping in at number six to launch five sixes and 19 fours at Mill Lane.

Opener Ahmer Shah hit 36 and Ansar Hussain weighed in with 55 from the middle order.

Despite the efforts of Andrew King (56) and Jamie Griffiths (34) in reply, Fahim Maan bowled the latter batsman and then forced two lbw decisions alongside a catch from Adnan Ahmad.

Feckenham were dismissed for 189 in 39.3 overs as Evesham earned 24 points from their 10th win of the season, which comfortably beat their tally from the last four campaigns put together.

Fahim Maan has played for Evesham since 2012 but admitted travelling issues may force him to leave despite enjoying a fine year.

He said: “I have scored 666 runs and taken 40 wickets this season. I’ve got five 50s and one 100. This was my best score of the season and, after reaching my 50 at Feckenham, I hit out for lots of boundaries.

“I am more of a bowler though and bowl medium-fast. They didn’t seem to pick my bowling. I’m pretty happy with this season. But I might have to change my club next year as it has been too far for me travelling.

“We didn’t have an overseas player this year but I think we could have been top two if we had.”

His team-mate Ali Asghar said: “We’re trying to bounce back. We’ve got the talent but haven’t been consistent and some players have been unavailable.

“Fahim Maan performed well. We were three or four down early on and did well to get a big total. Their batsmen then found him hard to play. He’s not really fast but is tricky to pick up as he can move the ball both ways.”
