Point to prove as four more needed

DANIEL Lennon will be given the chance to prove his manager was wrong to leave him on the sidelines after the attacker starred in Evesham's 1-1 draw at Barton Rovers last month.

Lennon netted United's goal and also cleared off his own goalline on an afternoon when Evesham's shortcomings were exposed by an on song home side that made it seven matches unbeaten.

However, while the Robins have won all four matches since that meeting, Rovers, visitors to St George's Lane on Saturday, have won just once in five matches, while failing to score in all three away games at Bishops Cleeve, Rothwell and Malvern.

Not happy "Danny's not been happy and he's certainly let me know about it," Paul West revealed. "Yes he was our best player at Barton but I decided to leave him out for the next match. When he's come off the bench he's given us a bit of a lift and Gary's suspension gives him a chance to show me that i was wrong to leave him out."

Lennon's inclusion for a match that could see Evesham clinch the Division One Midlands title might not be the only change. The United chief was delighted with the display of Mark Hands after coming on as substitute at Leighton after leaving him out in favour of Danny Scheppel.

The latter is almost certain to keep his place after sealing the win with his 14th goal of a productive campaign and Danny Hodnett could be the man to make way.

Simon Fitter could also get the nod ahead of Joe Clarke if West decides to start with the same 11 that finished the game so strong last Saturday.

Leamington's 3-0 win at Rothwell on Tuesday night cut Evesham's lead to six points but a fifth straight win for West's men and nothing more than victory for the Brakes at Woodford United could see United crowned champions this weekend.

Whatever happens, the Robins will be ground sharing for a third term at Worcester - a move confirmed by Jim Cockerton last week.

The Evesham chairman also revealed that a further planning application has gone before Wychavon District Council to develop an additional field on the site of the proposed new ground in Cheltenham Road.

The field will provide three extra pitches and a training area and Cockerton said that work on the new ground should be up and running before the end of the year if all goes to plan.

It remains to be seen whether that will happen but what is certain is that West and his squad have done their bit on the field.

It's now up to others to ensure that off the field plans are in place to play host to Premier Division football in 2009 should promotion be wrapped up either on Saturday or after the next home game with Woodford on Saturday, April 19.

Whatever happens in the two next two games, the Robins won't want to travel to Rushall on the last Saturday of the season needing to get a result to finally end Leamington's brave challenge on the same day that their rivals make the trip to whipping boys Berk-hamsted Town.

Saturday's game is being sponsored by Jewson Ltd and the ball by ACRS Refrigeration of Fladbury.
