Skipper Steve Lutz fired in a fortuitous winner three minutes into the second half to earn United a first away win of the Southern League season.
The visitors were full value for the victory but missed several chances to wrap up the points.
Lutz, Michael Hayden and James Knott were the chief culprits in front of goal but it was the experienced Mark Owen who gave a fabulous display up front and opened the scoring after 31 minutes when he glanced in substitute Daniel Lennon's cross.
Dunstable levelled four minutes before half-time when Jonathan Barnett found the top corner from 25 yards.
Owen could have quickly made it 2-1 at the start of the second half but produced a weak finish before his pass ended with Lutz's angled finish embarrassing the home goalkeeper at his near post.
Knott and Lutz then missed glorious chances to clinch the win but the points were United's after withstanding a late rally and five minutes of stoppage-time.
