| Daniel Lennon wasted United's clearest chance |
Evesham United 0, Bishops Cleeve 1
IF ANY team was going to end Evesham's superb unbeaten league sequence then, almost inevitably, it was going be their Gloucestershire near neighbours.
Cleeve, who did the double over Paul West's side last term, made it an unhappy new year for the Robins when substitute Lee Davis netted the only goal 12 minutes from time.
The home side, who had taken 31 points out of a possible 33 since losing to Leamington on September 22, lacked any sort of quality and chances were at a premium at both ends.
Michael Hayden miskicked from a great position after a mere ten seconds while Daniel Lennon dragged another glorious chance wide after 59 minutes with only Sam Gilder in the visiting goal to beat.
Not even the introduction of former Kidderminster and Bromsgrove striker Gary Hay after 68 minutes could pep up a shotshy United attack and it was Bishops who should really have added to their tally in the closing moments.
Matt Collins twice raced clear only to shoot wide, while Kevin Slack tested Vaughan, who was at fault for the game's only goal, on a couple of occasions.
The referee waved aside a couple of late Evesham penalty appeals on an afternoon when West's men were distinctly off colour as they made the worst possible start to 2008.
