Returning soldiers team up to start soccer club

The EVESHAM UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB that we know today dates from just after the Second World War when soldiers returning from action reformed the club and they immediately joined the Worcester League.

After some early success they moved to the Worcester Combination in 1951, finishing third in their first season and taking the league title in 1952/53. However, a club did exist in Evesham prior to the war, the "Town" reaching th FA Amateur Cup Final in 1923, losing 1-2 after extra time to London Caledonians at Crystal Palace. In the Club's first five years in the Worcester Combination, they were league champions twice and runners-up on two occasions, their lowest position being third in that first season.

In 1956 they left to join the Birmingham League and followed this with a move to the Warwickshire League in 1959 before returning to the Worcester (now Midland Combination) in 1963.

Since then they have won the league title four times (1965/66, 1967/68, 1968/69 and 1991/92) and reached the Challenge Cup Final on six occasions, lifting the trophy in 1988 when Boldmere St Michaels were defeated by the only goal and again in 1992 with a 4-0 win over Studley BKL.

Initially, the club played at Crown Meadow, moving to Common Road in 1968, opening the clubhouse in 1975.

Six former players have progressed into the Football League - Billy Tucker, Gary Stevens, Simon Brain, Kevin Rose, Andy Preece and Billy Turley. Tucker's rise to fame came as a result of a Worcestershire Senior Cup tie against Hereford United in which he blotted out the legendary John Charles. Hereford, at the time, were still in the Southern League, Billy moving with them into the Football League. He made 137 appearances before moving to Bury and then Swindon Town, before a serious injury ended his career. Stevens was a prolific goal scorer and joined Cardiff City in 1978 for £4,000. He returned to his hometown club Hereford United in March 1987.

On the goalscoring front, the late Sid Brain seems to have set a record that will be hard to beat. In 1951/52 he rattled in 112 Goals!

Sid was the uncle to Simon Brain, who was transferred to the then Conference side Cheltenham Town in January 1990 for £5,000, and went on to appear for Hereford United. Rose played for Hereford and Rochdale, Preece had spells with Stockport County, Crystal Pallace, Blackpool and more recently Bury, whilst goalkeeper Turley has turned out for Northampton Town and Rushden & Diamonds.

In 1991/92 the club came up trumps by completing a memorable double of the Midland Combination Premier Division and the Combination Challenge Cup. They also reached the quarter-finals of the FA Vase before losing to the eventual finalists Guiseley.

Some £5,000 was spent on the ground and they marked their first season in the Southern League Midland Division in a credible 15th position. Following a number of poor seasons, in 1997/98 Evesham appointed former Chelten Town boss Chris Robinson as the first full-time commercial and team manager.

However, United finished only one place off the foot of the Midland Division and only two weeks into the 1998/99 campaign, Robinson departed due to outside business commitments. The club then announced that Paul Knox and Mick Folland were the new joint managers. In January 1999 they left to take charge of Blakenhall and Mick Brennan returned for his third spell as manager at Common Road.

However, in September 1999, Brennan stepped down and the club installed the experienced former Redditch United and Kidderminster Harriers boss Phil Mullen. That season Evesham United finished mid table. They had a decent run in the FA Cup and reached the final of the Worcestershire Senior Cup.

After a disappointing start to the 2003/04 season, Mullen departed in October and former Coventry City defender, David Busst, was appointed his successor at the beginning of November.

He took over with the club struggling near the foot of the Dr. Martens League Western Division but he managed to turn things round and United finished mid-table with a credible 50 points.

The 2004/05 campaign saw Busst in his first full season in charge and with the experienced Paul West as his assistant, Evesham took their place in the Southern League Division One West.

It turned out to be a season to remember for Evesham's long suffering fans. After being in the top two for most of the season, a hiccup towards the end saw Evesham narrowly miss out on automatic promotion and had to settle for a place in the play-offs.

A Nail biting 2-1 sucess against Ashford Town (Middlesex) paired the Robins against local rivals Bromsgrove Rovers in the play-off final. A crowd of over 800 packed into Common Road to witness the game. Evesham romped to a 4-0 win to take their place in the Southern League Premier Division for the first time in their history. After a poor run of results Busst departed in February 2006. Paul West stepped up to take over the 'Hot Seat' with Mick Brennan his assistant.

Despite an improvement of results under West, Evesham were relegated on the final day of the season, finishing just one point behind fourth bottom, Northwood.

After selling Common Road for housing, Evesham will be playing their home games at Worcester City's, St George's Lane ground. Work will then start on a purpose built stadium on the outskirts of the town.
