Women at the summit after win on the road

PERSHORE sit proudly at the top of the Oak Sports Midland Women's Cricket League Division One table after defeating Wellingborough Old Grammarians by 22 runs on Sunday.

Pershore elected to bat but lost an early wicket before Charlotte Holtom came in to shore up the innings.

She shared a half-century second wicket stand with Naomi Heywood who finally fell for 29.

Holtom continued to play a fine innings before falling two runs short of a deserved half-century. Thea Brooks and Mandy Gowland both added useful late runs in a final total of 169-7.

Opening bowler Katie Blunt dismissed the Wellingborough captain cheaply in her second over but good running saw the second wicket pair rotating the strike well and accumulating a tidy score.

Captain Coral Handley struck with the ball but the scoreboard continued to tick over despite the occasional fall of wickets.

It wasn't until the final ten overs with the hosts only needing 50 to win that Pershore got their act together.

Careful field placings restricted the flow of runs and opener Zem Afzal, who carried her bat for 83, could only stand and watch as the tail-end crumbled.

Afzal's despair was further deepened when the last two batters failed to appear and the chasers were left 23 runs short of victory with Blunt the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-27.
