They equalised soon after with a well-taken goal but Evesham had their chances with Henry Woods going close, Ivan Masica hitting the crossbar and Powell an upright.
Extra-time saw Evesham take the lead with Powell again on target after beating three players to score from inside the box.
Sports, though, were not to be beaten and netted twice in the final ten minutes as tired United legs were twice caught on the break.
Joel Haycock, Pedro Bernardo and James Coldrick all had chances to make it 4-4 but it wasn't to be and it was Sports who took the honours after a great game played between two well-matched footballing teams.
UNITED crashed to only the second league defeat of the season in an ill-tempered game played in conditions more suited to water polo!
The curtailed clash saw Evesham take the lead through Elliot Grady but Colts scored twice before the break to take the lead.
Henry Woods, who was the provider for the first goal, saw an effort ruled out by a debatable offside flag, while appeals for a penalty when Tim DiFranco was pushed over in the penalty area were waved aside.
