EVESHAM UNITED 1, BRACKLEY TOWN 1.
EVESHAM United moved to eighth in the British Gas Business Premier Division, their highest ever placing, despite being held to a draw by Brackley Town at St George’s Lane.
A game of few chances looked to be heading Evesham’s way when substitute Danny Lennon fired the Robins in front with 10 minutes to go.
But managerless Brackley, whose former boss Phil Lines departed on Thursday, hit back to equalise soon after to earn a share of the spoils.
The hosts started with a spring in their step, and as early as the ninth minute had the ball in the visitors’ net, but Jamie Hyde’s effort was disallowed for offside. Then Saints defender Wayne Blossom back-tracked to head Danny Scheppel’s shot off the goal-line, when the ball looked destined for the top corner.
The visitors were restricted to a couple of half-chances before half-time, both from Ben Mackey and safely gathered by Nathan Vaughan, who was subject of an approach from Brackley before last month’s transfer deadline.
The opening action of the second period saw Steve Lutz head Simon Fitter’s free-kick wide of the target and Jermaine Clarke muscle his way through the visitors’ rearguard, only to have his shot blocked by Tom Willshere when faced with only the Brackley stopper to beat. Play then switched to the other end, Vaughan diving full length to get a hand to Mackey’s drive, when the Brackley striker looked certain to score.
The game then burst to life with two goals in five minutes.
Lennon fired in from the edge of the box to put Paul West’s men one-up, but a misunderstanding at the back allowed Blossom to pull the visitors level.
There was drama in stoppage time. Vaughan was penalised for handling a back pass in the area but Danny Hodnett came to Evesham’s rescue, clearing Mackey’s free-kick off the line.
EVESHAM UNITED: Vaughan, Watson, Hyde (Hayden 87), Hodnett, Luckett, Lutz (Blake 76), Fitter, Scheppel, Slack (Lennon 56), Jermaine Clarke, Joe Clarke. Subs not used: Ager, Wood. Att: 136.
