Historic finish in sight for Evesham

MANAGER Paul West says Evesham United finishing in the British Gas Business Premier Division top 10 would be a fantastic achievement.

The Robins already occupy that position in the table, following a 4-1 win over Hemel Hempstead, but need to secure a victory at relegation-threatended Hitchin Town on Saturday to make it certain as Brackley Town are hot on their heels.

It has already been a record-breaking campaign for the St George’s Lane tenants as they are already assured of the highest league finish in the club’s history.

That success has also been played out alongside a run to the FA Cup first round proper when they were beaten 2-0 by Blue Square Premier side Torquay.

Not surprisingly, West has been delighted with the efforts of his players over the last nine months but he wants one final push.

He said: “If anyone had offered us the top 10 at the start of the season that would have been a fantastic achievement and we are well on course for that.

“If we can get a win on Saturday that is where we will finish. It would be an absolutely great achievement. We are already going to finish as high as we every have at this level so there’s no pressure.

“But we want to try and finish the season as high as we can.”

Hitchin, though, will be no pushovers as nothing but victory will keep their hopes alive of avoiding the drop. Currently three points from safety, the Hertfordshire outfit also need Clevedon Town and Banbury United to slip up to aid their cause.

West added: “Hitchin will need to win to give themselves any chance of staying up but I am not interested in that, it’s about us going there and finishing the season on a high.”

Evesham will be without midfielder Steve Luckett (knee), while skipper Steve Lutz (calf) and James Blake (hamstring) are doubts.

Midfielder Simon Fitter (knee) played through the pain barrier against Hemel Hempstead but could be involved on Saturday.

Boss West said: “We were down to the bare bones at the weekend but Leon Woodley came in and I thought he was fantastic.

“Michael Hayden was also good and those guys will be given opportunities to play.”
