Robins end season on a high

HITCHIN TOWN 1, EVESHAM UNITED 2.

EVESHAM United rounded off their league programme with a fourth double of the season and sentenced Hitchin to relegation from the British Gas Business Premier Division.

The Canaries, who needed to win and hope results went their way to avoid the drop, made the perfect start taking a 12th minute lead.

A neat three-man move ended with Mark Barnes giving Nathan Vaughan no chance in the Robins goal with a measured finish from 15 yards.

Evesham struggled to put their game together, and it was Vaughan who went closest to levelling the scores, when his huge clearance struck the Hitchin crossbar with home stopper Martin Bennett beaten.

But in the last action of the half, Jermaine Clarke got on the end of Michael Hayden's cross to equalise for Evesham with a powerful header.

Clarke went close to adding a second after the break. First having a header flash wide and then a goalbound strike deflected for a fruitless corner after good work by Hayden.

With the home side anxious to preserve their Premier Division status, Evesham silenced Hitchin's biggest crowd of the season, by grabbing the winner with seven minutes to go. Substitute Robert Ager got on the end of a clearance and netted with a superb lob over the stranded Bennett.

EVESHAM UNITED: Vaughan, Watson (Wood 68), Hyde, Hodnett, Joe Clarke, Blake, Fitter, Woodley, Jermaine Clarke, Lennon (Ager 75), Hayden (Scheppel 89). Subs not used: Lutz, Davis. Attandance: 534.
