SLOPPY defensive errors need to be stamped out according to Evesham United manager Paul West as his out-of-form side look ahead to a home Zamaretto League Premier Division double header.
United crashed to their third successive defeat when two goals in the last six minutes saw them lose 2-1 at Chippenham Town, including the winner which saw United fail to clear their lines.
This followed a 2-1 defeat at Merthyr Tydfil the previous week but Sunday’s home clash with Clevedon Town was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
But the Robins manager has issued a rallying cry to his players and, despite the recent poor run, has praised them for their efforts as they face Didcot Town on Saturday followed by Halesowen Town on Tuesday night.
United will assess the fitness of new signing, Evesham-born midfielder Andy Ducros and striker Rory Curtis, who went off with calf and hamstring strains respectively during the first-half of the Chippenham clash at training tonight but both are expected to be fit.
West said: “We’ve been sloppy lately.
“At Chippenham there were 30 seconds of normal time left and we had two or three chances to clear our lines but didn’t.
“We played well and had a few chances ourselves so we were disappointed not to come away with at least a point.
“Nathan didn’t have a save to make for long periods of the second-half.
“We’re all in it together. There is a lot of quality in our squad. This isn’t a time to feel sorry for ourselves, we need to stand up and be counted.
“I can’t ask for anymore from my players, they will get their rewards for their effort. I can’t knock them in terms of effort in the last two games in particular. But we’ve also got to get that second goal as well.
“Saturday is a big game for us and it is a tough one. Our last two games have been disappointing.
“The Merthyr and Chippenham games were always going to be tough. The last two games we’ve not had the rub of the green.
“Nathan has made two mistakes in the last two games that have been costly but he has won us a lot of football matches over the last few seasons so I can’t be overly critical of him. There are fine lines in this league.
“Our record at home is not good so we need to improve on it.
“There are three matches that we haven’t got anything out of now. We’ve not played for the best part of seven weeks so our match fitness levels need to improve.”
