EVESHAM United manager Paul Collicutt felt Ashley Edenborough’s late equaliser against Wimborne Town was a “perfectly good goal”.

The Robins have come under fire from their Dorset opponents after Wimborne boss Steve Cuss claimed the 88th minute header to make it 2-2 in Saturday’s Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West clash had been “punched” in by the Evesham striker.

Cuss also said that Edenborough had “apologised” afterwards and admitted “he was surprised he had got away with it”.

But Collicutt said he did not see a punch and also thought there was a hand-ball in the build-up to Wimborne’s second to move the visitors 2-1 ahead at the Jubilee Stadium.

The United chief said: “Feelings were high and with two minutes to go and losing 2-1, the ball came in at speed from a free-kick. Ashley got his head to it and it hit the back of the net.

“I thought it was a perfectly good goal but they are claiming he hand-balled it. Whether he did or not I don’t know.

“They were appealing when the ball went in, just like we did with their second goal.

“Sometimes you get lucky and other times you don’t. I was happy to get a point out of the game.”

Elsewhere, Kidderminster Harriers head to Gateshead tonight (7.45pm) bidding to keep their Vanarama Conference play-off hopes alive. Despite moving up to eighth after Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Nuneaton Town, Gary Whild’s side are now seven points shy of the top five.

Keeper Danny Lewis reckons nothing less than victory will do at the International Stadium if they want to remain in the hunt.

He said: “A win is the only option for us if we want to kick on and get that final play-off place. There’s always one team that comes up late but we can’t really leave it much later. Every time I’ve been to Gateshead the wind has been like Saturday’s game, so we’ll expect that there, “Earlier on, Saturday would have been a good point — a clean sheet in horrible conditions — but at this stage of the season we really need to be getting three points.”

Gateshead, who are 13th in the table, were without a game at the weekend after their trip to Dartford was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
