FOOTBALLER Jamie Insall is bidding to swap goalscoring exploits at Worcester’s Brickfields Park for more majestic settings like Ibrox Stadium.

The 23-year-old striker, a prolific force for Bromyard Town and WCT Youth Raiders last season, was surprised to get an invite to trial with Scottish Championship Hibernian’s development side in Edinburgh.

But Worcester born-and-bred Insall grabbed the chance and impressed Hibs manager Alan Stubbs, the former Everton defender, who extended his stay to see him train with the first team.

After starting with Kidderminster Harriers’ youth side, Insall played for Stourport Swifts, Redditch United, Pershore Town and Westfields among others.

His football career stuttered in 2012 when he was handed a suspended jail sentence and 250 hours of unpaid community work for fracturing an opponent’s jaw with a punch while playing for Pershore.

However, pacy Insall bounced back with prolific seasons for Littleton and then West Midlands League Division One champions Bromyard as well as helping Brickfields-based Raiders to the Worcester and District League Sunday Division Two title.

His form earned him a move to Northern Premier League Stourbridge but then the Hibs call came out of the blue.

Insall said: “I scored four goals in six games at Stourbridge in pre-season and felt I had a run of three or four matches when I was really top-notch.

“I got 42 goals last season (for Worcester Raiders Saturday and then Bromyard Town) and have scored more than 80 in the last two seasons.

“I had a random phone call from my old manager at Littleton (Andy Robbins), who told me an agent wanted to speak with me. My name had been thrown around quite a bit because of the goals.

“I’m really not sure what made a club like Hibs take a punt on me. But for me it was a no-brainer. I’ve got my own hotel room and they’ve paid for my meals.

“If it doesn’t work out here, then it’s been an experience and I’ll go back to Stourbridge.

“It’s gone quickly and I’ve really enjoyed my time here. They’ve made me feel very welcome and it doesn’t feel like I’ve left England.”

Reflecting on the incident at Pershore, Insall admitted: “I was quite immature. Since then, I’ve had a little baby boy (Finley), who is three now.

“I was in the wrong place in my life and shouldn’t have been on a football pitch.

“There was a year when not many people wanted to touch me but then I scored over 30 for Littleton and Westfields.

“There was a lot of anger around me but I’m more relaxed and laid-back now.”

Insall scored and claimed an assist as a Hibs development XI drew 2-2 with Brentford under 20s and he is due to finish training with the first team today.

But he remains unsure as to why he has never played for Worcester City.

Insall revealed: “I honestly believe there was a time when I would have played for my home city for nothing. A lot of my family support them. I feel the club don’t look at local talent.”
