SOUTHERN LEAGUE WEST: Evesham United 1 Wimborne Town 2

A BRACE from visiting substitute Toby Holmes saw Evesham United slip to a rare home defeat after failing to produce their Sunday best against Wimborne.

An uneventful first half was followed by an action-packed second with Archie Haskayne's blast within 40 seconds of the restart lighting the blue touch paper.

The Robins could and should have stamped their authority on proceedings but got caught with a sucker punch when Toby Holmes netted a rebound with his first touch.

United skipper Linden Dovey's hesitancy then proved decisive as Toby Holmes pinched possession and rolled under Kevin Sawyer with eight minutes remaining.

Wimborne were worthy of at least a point having hit the woodwork twice, once in the build-up to the opener, and forced Sawyer into some fine stops.

Greg Peel's blocked shot was as good as it got for Evesham early on and during Town's brief flurry, Sam Bayston brushed the roof of the crossbar with a swinging effort from the left on 28 minutes.

Luke Holmes was a whisker away from giving Wimborne the lead on the stroke of half-time but could only look on in anguish as his daisy cutter whistled past the far post after slick approach play involving Jack Lovell and Luke Burbidge.

A half clearance led to Haskayne breaking the deadlock straight after the restart, the midfielder's 20-yard high blast flew beyond the reach of Magpies keeper Gerard Benfield.

Sawyer produced some magic to repel Louis Kellaway's point-blank follow-up from a free-kick midway through the second half before the Robins missed a golden opportunity to double their money.

New strike duo Lewis Powell and Ethan Moore, sent on together seven minutes earlier, combined well but Lewis Binns blasted over from six yards from the delicious delivery that followed.

Wimborne levelled 13 minutes from time when Billy Maybury's blockbuster of a free-kick cannoned off the angle of post and bar and although Sawyer denied Luke Holmes, namesake Toby could not miss on the half volley from close quarters.

The action became frantic and end to end with Lovell flashing wide of the far post for Wimborne and seconds after Moore had seen his first-time hit ruled out for offside at the other end, the visitors stole the points.

A high ball from Benfield was fluffed by Dovey and Toby Holmes made no mistake with Evesham unable to muster a credible push for an equaliser late on.
