PAUL Collicutt has bitter experience of what complacency can lead to at Kidlington.

The Evesham United manager can recall former Premier League midfielder Garry Parker silencing one of his Bishop’s Cleeve brethren back when he managed the Gloucestershire outfit in the Hellenic League.

The ex-Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Leicester City man turned out for one of his local clubs and went on to feature for their veterans’ team before becoming Neil Lennon’s trusted right-hand man.

And that 3-1 defeat at Yarnton Road seems to have stayed with Collicutt just as much as United’s home loss to the same opponents earlier this season.

“I can remember going there with Cleeve when Garry Parker played for them,” said Collicutt.

“They had a free-kick about 35 yards out and one of my lads, the clever so-and-so, went up and said ‘you’ve got no chance’.

“Of course, he scored one hell of a goal. That shut him up quite easily.

“You could see what a good player he was, making an awful lot of time and space for himself. He was a cut above everyone else on the day.”

The current crop, still in with a shout of the Southern League West play-offs alongside Evesham, may not have a famous face to call upon on Saturday (3pm) but in new recruit Conor McDonagh have a man who netted a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Bideford on his full debut.

“I haven’t been to Kidlington for a number of years now but it was never an easy place to go and they have shown their intent by picking up a lad from a higher level,” he added.

“They came to us and won in the early part of the season. They were quite impressive on the night.

“On Saturday they won at Bideford and are in with a shout of the play-offs. The new lad got a hat-trick on his debut in that game so we will have to be on our toes.

“There is no way we can afford to underestimate them on Saturday having been beaten at home. We will have to be at our best.”

The Robins soar into the match on the back of back-to-back home wins and clean sheets for the first time this season.

As pleasing as Saturday’s 1-0 triumph over Bristol Manor Farm was, it still fuelled Collicutt’s sense of injustice over the 3-0 defeat at Didcot Town seven days prior to that.

“Football can be very frustrating,” he said. “Saturday saw us pick up a good win and it was nice to pick up a clean sheet for the second game on the bounce. We deserved it.

“The strange thing was we had played better the previous Saturday and lost. That said, we showed another side to our game and ground out a win which was pleasing.

“Our performance in the fixture at Manor Farm was probably our best of the season. We opened them up and you could see they were a little apprehensive about that this time."

That followed on from a 3-0 home victory over Slimbridge on the Wednesday in between.

Carl Brown’s crossed effort sailed in after 24 minutes with Adam Mann doubling the lead with a free-kick less than a minute after half-time. Mat Liddiard's penalty sealed the deal.
