Michael van Gerwen suffered a shock defeat in front of his home fans as Gary Anderson moved into the top four of the Premier League.

It was a rare Wednesday night of action in Rotterdam as the Dutch city hosted a double-header following the cancellation of week five in Exeter due to inclement weather on March 1.

However, Peter Wright upset a raucous crowd to down the world number one for the second time in this season’s competition, despite Van Gerwen recording an average of 106.87.

The Scot stormed into a 5-2 lead without missing a double with checkouts of 98, 84 and 71, before Van Gerwen mounted a great comeback.

The Dutchman hit finishes of 122, 94 and 148 to level the scores at 5-5 but Wright held his nerve to win the next two legs and seal two vital points.

Anderson moved into the play-offs after easing to a 7-2 victory over Michael Smith, who dropped to fourth, with a stunning 109 average in the opening match of the evening.

Rob Cross eased past Daryl Gurney 7-4 to move up to second, but he failed to join Van Gerwen at the top of the table after falling to a 7-3 defeat to the in-form Anderson.

The 47-year-old almost hit a nine-dart finish in the eighth leg but wired double 12 as he moved into third in the table, three points behind ‘Mighty Mike’.

Raymond van Barneveld had earlier got the Dutch crowd excited as he notched four maximums en route to a comfortable 7-3 victory over Simon Whitlock to end his four-match winless run.
