BOURTON-on-the-Water trainer Ben Pauling enjoyed a stand-out National Hunt meeting as he clinched a Doncaster double.

Temple Guiting handler Jonjo O’Neill and Chipping Norton’s Charlie Longsdon also chipped in with wins in a Cotswold-dominated South Yorkshire meeting.

The up-and-coming Pauling, former assistant to top trainer Nicky Henderson, struck through Smart Freddy and Ergo Sum.

He only started out in his own right last season and teamed up with jockey Nico de Boinville, who is best known as Sprinter Sacre’s work rider.

Nine-year-old Smart Freddy (9-2) battled with Gary Moore’s Leo Luna in the straight but was just gaining the upper hand in the Play Sportinglife Pick 6 For Free Novices’ Chase when his rival fell at the last.

“I’m thrilled with that. It’s great to have him back as he’s missed large spells through injury,” said Pauling. “He’s got a fantastic attitude.”

Eight-year-old Ergo Sum (7-2 joint-favourite) claimed the Skybet Are You In? Novices’ Handicap Chase.

Pauling, who also enjoyed recent wins at Ludlow and Warwick, said: “I’m very pleased.

“He jumped to his right but I think it’s more mental than physical as he jumps some right and then at others he’s straight as a die.”

O’Neill saddled the first two in the Follow Your Bets With Skybet Tracker Handicap Hurdle.

Tony McCoy steered 2-1 shot Spookydooky to a seven-length victory over stable-mate At Reception.

The jockey said: “The bit better ground helped him and he’s hopefully progressive.”

A Vos Gardes (5-1), highly regarded by Longsdon, got his career back on track in the Sportinglife My Stable Maiden Hurdle with a hard-fought win.

Meanwhile, the BetBright Chase at Kempton next month could be the target for Annacotty (5-1), trained by Martin Keighley in Condicote, after he nailed Big Fella Thanks close to home to take Cheltenham’s freebets.com Trophy Handicap Chase.

There were no other Cotswold winners on Festival trials day.

Stow-on-the-Wold trainer David Bridgwater picked up a Uttoxeter success through Saffron Prince (10-1).

His stable star The Giant Bolster (11-2) was fourth in Cheltenham’s BetBright Cup Chase.

Bridgwater was delighted with the 10-year-old’s run and is relishing a fourth crack at the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March.
