THE Vale Golf Club ladies’ club championship was played over 27 holes in continuous torrential rain.

Sally Smith shone through the conditions to win with the best gross of 132, ahead of runner-up Lyn Robinson (135).

The best nett went to Kathy Cowell with 118.5, in front of Jenny Braithwaite (121).

The Lady Captain’s Trophy over 18 holes was won by Issy Green with 74 nett, followed by Rosemary Shufflebotham (81).

The Angora Cup was claimed by Penny Sharp with 78 nett and Pearl Winchester finished second with 83.

The Lily Brennan Memorial Trophy saw Jan Ledbury, Penny Sharp and Pat Willis win with 73 points, ahead of Rosie Loh, Jean Humphries and Chris Millward (64) and Audrey Sidwell, Deb Smith and Margaret Houlcroft (61 on count-back).

Meanwhile, 42 The Vale seniors joined their captain Rob Sharp for an away day at Copt Heath in Solihull.

The course presented a different challenge from usual for The Vale men’s 18-hole stableford.

Rob Sharp won Division One, with David Viner second and Mick Lewis third.

The Division Two victor was Patrick Staines, in front of Vincent Domingo and Howard Parsons.

The best gross was by John Eastoe of 84 and nearest to the pin was Sharp on the 13th along with Bryn Keast.

Nearest the pin on the 18th were David Carrington and Nic Fielden.

A putting competition was won by Fielden and the Paul Azinger Trophy for most putts during the round went to Ed Reynolds.

Eighty duos entered The Vale pairs open but the weather was showery and blustery with the course playing long.

John Barton, of Coventry Hearsall, and Brian Platt, of Forest of Arden, won ahead of the hosts’ Stuart Crowther and John Thomson from Stirling, with both on 43 points.

The Vale’s Chris Enticknap and Howard Parsons were third followed by clubmates Brian Bunn and Mike Roberts, with both on 42.

Jim Rushworth was nearest the pin on the fifth hole, while closest in two was David Jervis, of Brickhampton, on the 18th.

Meanwhile, 48 players contested Evesham’s seniors invitation day, with seven pairs managing 40 or more stableford points.

The first three, all on 42, were separated by count-back, with Evesham’s Dave Kewley and Tewkesbury Park’s Phil Hall edging out runners-up Ian Tait (Evesham) and John Eastoe (The Vale) and the third-placed Neil Croft (Evesham) and Mike Hird (The Vale).

The hosts’ Mike Abraham was nearest the pin on the ninth with Geoff Smith, of Puckrup Hall, even closer for the visitors’ prize.

Harry Shute, of Ham Manor near Worthing, travelled the furthest to take part.

Broadway ladies competed in their 36-hole club championship on a day that began with winds gusting to gale force.

Linda Carruthers was club champion, earning the prestigious trophy with 169 gross over the two rounds, with Vicky Watkins managing 171 for the runner-up silver salver prize.

Watkins achieved best nett with 153 to take the Julia Ward Crystal Vase.

Elizabeth Milnes-James won the supporters’ stableford over 18 holes with 35 points, ahead of Annabelle Carter (34).

Joyce Gilbert took a well-earned first place in a nine-hole qualifier with 12, leaving Sue Byrd second with 11.
