WORCESTER Swimming Club’s Will Gearey was crowned boys’ under 13s winner at the British Modern Biathlon Championships.

At Tudor Grange, Solihull, the 12-year-old was outstanding in both the swim and run disciplines.

The pupil at St Egwin’s Middle School, Evesham, also won the national biathlon event in 2014 and qualified as second seed having won the West Midlands competition.

In the 100-metre freestyle, Gearey (pictured below) was top seed and won in 59.28 seconds for 1,356 points.

Seeded 10th for the 1,600m run in rainy, windy conditions, he fought hard to tuck in behind the early leaders.

Gearey dug deep on the final lap to cross in seventh place in five minutes 19.59 seconds for 1,278 points.

He was crowned champion with 2,634 points, 102 ahead of second spot.

Pershore nine-year-old David Annis was sixth after a 50m swim and 800m run.

Blessed Edward Oldcorne College pupil Megan Annis, 12, was sixth in the under 13s age group and Pershore’s Lauren Annis, 10, produced personal bests in the 12 and under section.
