EVESHAM’S Olly Turner finished fifth and won the driver-of-the-meeting award in the Fiesta Junior Championship at Rockingham Motor speedway.

The teenager defied the scorching conditions to display his fitness and resilience in spectacular style after making progress at Silverstone a few weeks earlier.

In qualifying on Saturday afternoon, Turner, who represents Jam Sport team, managed to set a personal best time after a pit stop and tyre change midway through the session.

He knocked off .6 seconds after just three laps to put him 11th for the opening race and saved plenty of tyre for the notoriously rough surface and technical bends which Rockingham is known for.

Turner made a swift start in race one which put him up the order.

Within just a few turns, the Jam Sport contingent showed their abilities with some great moves on each other and exciting racing.

However, a number of battle wounds later Turner had to pull off tthe rack with a drive shaft issue which ended his hopes of a top-six result.

Turner was not deflated and, relishing the adversity, set about race two preparations.

Feeling fit and with confidence growing on track, Turner started towards the rear of the field.

Again a good start and opening up a lead from a couple of fellow team-mates, Turner allowed himself space on the infamous turn one action after where the attack began.

Moving through the field, picking off car after car, the excitement of Turner’s drive started to build among the crowd and spectators. He eventually finished fifth.

Turner had a well-deserved moment on the podium to the delight the team and his supporters.

Knowing how hard it was to pull out a performance such as in race two was a testament to the car and those who work with Turner.

He will next be in action at Snetterton, Norfolk, on July 22 and 23 and it is a circuit he really enjoys.
