AN ever-increasing strong and gusty westerly wind under leaden skies and warm sunshine challenged the sailing skills of the six crews that took to the River Avon for the July Handicap Series at Arden Sailing Club in Defford.

In race one they managed to stay dry throughout and after handicap adjustment Niall Campbell (Laser) took first ahead of David Brydon (Heron) and David Yule (Heron).

With winds now gusting around the start line six crews started but it quickly came down to three with Yule capsizing before the start followed by two retirements.

Campbell made it a clean sweep in first with Tricia Wood (Comet) and Simon Newman (Streaker) second and third respectively despite having both capsized.

Race three was abandoned due to worsening weather conditions.
