A BIDFORD-on-Avon competitor will head to the XTERRA Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii after finishing second in her age group in the Belgian qualifier.

Rachel Kirkwood, 48, was runner-up in her section for 45 to 49 year olds.

There were 1,200 entrants at the race in Namur who had to endure a one-kilometre sea-water swim, a 34km bike ride and then a 10km run.

She finished with a time of four hours 24 minutes 57 seconds.

Despite her impressive time Kirkwood did not think she would qualify for the world championships on October 29.

“Usually in women’s events it’s just the first place that qualifies so I was amazed to hear I’ve qualified too.” she said.

The XTERRA World Championships is a global triathlon competition founded in 1996.

They have races in Australia, Europe and America.

The final is in Hawaii every year and in 2017 it is in Kapalua.

“When in Hawaii in October I aspire to make the top 20,” said Kirkwood.

“Top 10 would be better still but I’m at the top end of the age group so likely to be competing with younger fellow competitors.”

There will be around 800 triathletes in Hawaii made up of 75 professionals and 700 amateurs.

Kirkwood has been training with Evesham Vale Triathletes and will tackle a 1.5km sea-water swim, 32km mountain bike ride and a 10.5km trail run in Hawaii.

“Karen (Vann-Hill) has been a generous and supportive training partner. Evesham Vale provided great training sessions.” she said.

The event will be broadcast on various television channels.

“I’m determined to make the very best of this wonderful opportunity,” declared Kirkwood who added she started training due to wanting to swim the Channel for her 40th birthday.
