EVESHAM Golf Club's seniors played in the annual Wychavon Challenge Cup on a fine, dry day.

The four-ball better-ball medal off the white tees saw players' handicaps reduced to 90 per cent to make it more challenging.

The winners with 66 nett on countback thanks to 31 on the back nine were Ian Wood and Jeff Fletcher.

Wood scored an eagle at the 15th hole and Fletcher a nett albatross at the 18th.

Second with 33 on the back nine were Geoff Wellens and Gerry Ricketts while third with 69 were Malcolm Hiscock and Hans Holzgartner.

The seniors' championship was played over two days but the weather intervened and forced the round on the first day to be abandoned due to a waterlogged course.

The competition was reduced to a single round on the second day but the weather was fine.

Twenty players took part and Mike Abraham won the Diffin Cup and the Wilson Jug.

His score of 86 gross 70 nett was sufficient.

Second with 88-72 was Wellens with Bill Dobie third on gross on 89 and Steve Deakin third on nett on 73.

Evesham seniors lost 4-2 at Ombersley.

Wood and Ian Facer won 2&1 and Martin Williams and Mick Hocking triumphed 4&3.

But there were defeats for Neil Croft and Deakin 5&3, Mike Whiteford and Malcolm Carnall 4&3, Hiscock and Les Bond 2&1 and Bill Dobie and Tony Clemow 5&3.

Twenty-eight ladies from Evesham travelled to Bransford in sunny conditions for a stableford on their captain's away day.

The course was tricky in places with lots of water to challenge the mind but this did not deter good play and high scoring.

The winning team with 85 points included Marlene Billings, Gill Smith, Patsy Brumage and Angela Fletcher.

Jean Bevan, Frances Wilkinson, Enid Walker and Sandra Piovesana were second on 83.

Nearest the pin on the par threes were Jean Hunt, Piovesana, Mel Evans and Smith.
