BRETFORTON were crowned national champions at the England Hockey Women’s Investec Masters Championships.

They won the Over 45s Investec Tier Two title with a 3-0 win over Kingston-upon-Hill at London’s Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.

It was the most memorable day in the club’s 70-year history after they finished runners-up in the the over 35s final two years ago.

Bret’s Julie Hall scored the opener with a field goal right on half-time.

In the second half, Rosemary Logan and Lucy Wilkes put a shine on the scoreline and sent their supporters home happy.

Bret attacked from the off with Dawn Thatcher and Hall putting the pressure on down the right.

Kingston were dangerous on the break and defender Sylvia Thomas cleared off the line following a penalty corner.

Determined midfield play from Logan and Danni Cox kept up Bret’s possession and Tess Lewinton shot just wide from a one-on-one.

Ness Dufty’s effort was cleared off the line but then Hall touched home the opener after Deb Slatter’s attempt was parried by the keeper.

Logan flicked home the second in the D after Hall’s quick run down the right and pass.

Kingston hit the post and then keeper Vicky Watkins pushed another late effort onto the upright.

But Bret broke to seal the win with Logan finding Wilkes to finish into an open goal.

John Shaw stepped in at short notice to coach the team as Julie Stowe was unable to make the day after leading Bret to the final.

The squad, captained by Lisa Workman, also included Blanche Surman, Sally Privett and Andrea Cole.
