SKIPPER Nathan Chambers is confident Evesham can end Cleobury Mortimer’s long unbeaten run to book a place in the RFU Midlands Junior Vase final.

The Vale outfit face their biggest challenge of the season against in-form Cleobury at Love Lane in an intriguing semi-final showdown on Saturday at 2.15pm.

Evesham are buoyant after climbing to second spot in Midlands Four West (South) following a deserved 20-3 win at promotion rivals Claverdon.

But Cleobury will be a tougher test because they have won all 14 league matches this term and hold a 15-point advantage over their nearest rivals in Midlands Four West (North).

They have been boosted this term by the return of powerhouse number eight Paul Hulland, a former captain at National League Two North side Luctonians. Hulland holds a club record of 110 tries in all competitions for Lucs.

Chambers said: “Cleobury will certainly offer a huge threat and are undefeated in their league. However, our confidence is high after last week’s victory.

“We have had a big week of training and I believe we can do it. The boys like a big game and it doesn’t get much bigger than an RFU Midlands Junior Vase semi-final with the thought of a potential home final.”

Evesham silenced Claverdon’s boisterous atmosphere in their vice-presidents’ day encounter.

Playing up the slope in the first-half, Evesham fell 3-0 behind due to over-eagerness but hit back strongly.

They established early set-piece dominance, controlling field position and possession.

Fraser Goggin eluded a tackle to wriggle over the line midway through the first-half and Mike Harris’ conversion gave Evesham a 7-3 lead at the break.

Evesham dictated the second-half with solid game management from Harris and scrum-half Dan Humpston.

Their scrum began to power through and they enjoyed a 20-metre shove at one point.

Evesham’s pressure eventually led to Humpston crossing for a converted score.

The visitors sealed the win after two penalties were awarded at the scrum and full-back Sam Hopkins slotted the points.

Meanwhile, Pershore slipped to sixth in Midlands Three West (South) after a 22-19 defeat at Southam.
