CAPTAIN Nathan Chambers is remaining upbeat despite Evesham’s Twickenham dreams being shattered in the RFU Midlands Junior Vase.

The Vale side put up a brave display before slipping 27-3 at in-form Cleobury Mortimer in the regional semi-finals.

Evesham could meet Cleobury again in the North Midlands Vase final if Chambers’ side triumph at Bredon Star in the last four on March 14 and Cleobury get through.

Chambers said: “For our young Evesham outfit, it has been a hugely successful cup run. Ultimately, we came unstuck against tough, more experienced opponents.

“But the message after the game remained positive. Our side certainly have huge potential and an exciting future ahead.”

Second-placed Evesham now turn their attention to securing promotion from Midlands Four West (South) and they host Coventrians on Saturday (2.15pm).

In the Vase, Cleobury came out strongly from the first whistle and did not let Evesham settle into a rhythm.

Early pressure led to a penalty, which Cleobury slotted to a take a 3-0 lead.

Evesham fought back with competitive, testing set-piece encounters and huge defensive efforts from both teams in the next 20 minutes.

Cleobury intended to pin Evesham’s attacking backs deep in their own half.

Evesham broke at speed and, after fine work from their back three, created an overlap but were caught out when Cleobury’s winger spotted the danger and intercepted before running the length of the field for a converted try.

Evesham replied with a huge amount of pressure and, after great work at the breakdown, seemed certain to score.

However, the ball was shipped wide only to see the final pass go to ground and Evesham trailed 10-0 at the break.

After the interval, Evesham were penalised for over-aggression and allowed Cleobury to regain the initiative.

A kick to the corner and a catch-and-drive allowed Cleobury’s pack to cross for another score.

Determined Evesham started to move the ball quickly and stretch the hosts’ defence but only managed to kick a penalty.

Cleobury crossed for a third try and deservedly secured a Midlands final against Rugby Lions.
