FIT-AGAIN Worcester Warriors winger Sam Smith has got his eye on the play-offs after making a try-scoring return to action against Bedford Blues.

The 24-year-old played 80 minutes in the 32-17 win and showed no signs of the thigh injury which kept him out of action for a month.

While some of the Warriors squad are taking a rest this week, Smith is working hard to make sure he’s sharp for their next Greene King IPA Championship fixture against basement side Plymouth Albion on March 7.

“I am in training this week to make sure I am right going into the lead-in to the play-offs,” said Smith.

“I worked hard on my rehab to get fit for the Bedford game and I was really happy to be back out there.

“No player wants to miss any games so it was good to be back with the boys.”

Smith has now scored 11 times in 13 appearances this term, including eight touchdowns in his last four full appearances.

Table-topping Warriors played up the infamous Bedford slope in the first-half and a couple of costly handling errors contributed to the hosts leading 17-0 at the break.

“There’s no way you can coast into a game in this league and expect to come away with the win,” he said.

“It’s something we make sure we don’t do.

“If we had not go our mindset right in the second-half, we would have lost.

“There were lots of silly errors and interceptions and Bedford really fed off that.

“We weren’t too worried as a squad at half-time. We knew that if we kept things tight and looked after the ball, then we could capitalise on our possession. “ Smith added: “It was good to get tested like we were. No one went hiding — we all put in 100 per cent effort — and we got the rewards. In the future it would be good not to put ourselves into such a hole.”
