DIRECTOR of cricket Steve Rhodes believes Worcestershire will learn from their 10-wicket drubbing against champions Yorkshire in their LV= County Championship Division One opener at New Road.

The County were blown away for just 100 in their second innings after dismissing Yorkshire for 307 on the third morning of the match.

In glorious sunshine, and with ex-international umpire Dickie Bird watching, Tykes openers Alex Lees (52 no) and Will Rhodes (45 no) then steered their side to their 105 target in 17 overs.

It was a sobering return to the top-flight for Worcestershire, who competed strongly for two days before Steven Patterson (5-11) and Jack Brooks (4-28) caused havoc.

Worcestershire return to Championship action against Sussex at Hove on Sunday (11am).

Rhodes said: “Sometimes you have to take your hat off to the opposition and I thought Bresnan and Brooks bowled fine opening spells.

“It is disappointing to lose but it is not a sprint, it’s a marathon and we will learn a lot from that but I’ve got to take my hat off to them.

“How we bounce back is crucial. We’ve got a tough game coming up at Sussex, they are all tough, and it will be one to look forward to, because it will be new challenges again.”

Worcestershire collected six points for the defeat, three for batting and three for bowling.

Yorkshire had resumed their first innings on 298-9 and Gareth Andrew completed a five-wicket haul when Tim Bresnan was caught for 83. Andrew finished with 5-85 with Shantry (4-65).

Worcestershire soon slipped to 21-4 in their second innings, with Richard Oliver (1), Moeen Ali (4), skipper Daryl Mitchell (8) and Alex Gidman (4) falling cheaply.

Tom Fell and Tom Kohler- Cadmore added 27 in 14 overs before Patterson picked up two wickets in two balls.

Kohler-Cadmore made 24, while Andrew departed for 16 as Worcestershire were shot out in 35.3 overs.
