SKIPPER Daryl Mitchell and the Worcestershire batsmen built on the success of Joe Leach and the County attack on the second day of the LV= County Championship Division One clash with Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

Leach picked up another five wickets as Worcestershire bowled out Hampshire for 222 before lunch.

Then Mitchell featured in stands of 62 with Richard Oliver, 94 with Tom Fell and 58 with Alex Gidman as Worcestershire reached 221-3 when the players went off for bad light.

Mitchell was then unbeaten on 80 — his first Championship half-century of the campaign — under grey skies which prompted the floodlights to be switched on from early afternoon.

Leach followed up his career best 6-73 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston with figures of 5-63 from 22 overs. He has now taken 23 wickets in seven Championship innings this summer.

Hampshire resumed on 119-4 and lost their last six wickets for 103 runs as Worcestershire claimed maximum bowling points.

Leach claimed three more wickets in the morning and there were one each for Charlie Morris, Ed Barnard — his second of the innings — and Colin Munro.

Leach made the breakthrough when James Vince (8) went for an attempted pull and was bowled.

Morris came on for Leach after an initial six-ver spell and in his first over Adam Wheater (15) was caught down the leg-side by keeper Ben Cox.

Munro came into the attack for Jack Shantry and he removed Will Smith (40). He looked to play behind square on the off side and was bowled.

Wickets continued to tumble and Cox took a fine catch in front of first slip as Sean Ervine (17) edged a Barnard delivery.

Leach then wrapped up the innings in double quick time as Danny Briggs (7) was pouched at first slip by Alex Gidman and then last man Bradley Wheal (0) provided Cox with a fourth catch of the innings.

The final bowling figures were Morris 18-5-43-1, Leach 22-4-63-5, Shantry 19-6-46-1, Barnard 17-5-50-2 and Munro 3-0-10-1.

Oliver set off in typically aggressive mood and brought the 50 up in the 14th over with a boundary off Gareth Berg. He then pulled and off-drove Sean Ervine for successive boundaries.

But after making 33, Oliver was caught in the gully by Will Smith off Berg after hitting five fours in his 48-ball innings.

Mitchell dug in and provided typically determined resistance as he continued his recent upturn in form. He reached his half-century off 113 balls with four fours via a single off Berg.

But the same bowler accounted for Fell (48) who was caught by Liam Dawson at second slip at 156-2 in the 42nd over.

Mitchell drove successive balls from James Tomlinson for four to move into the 70s.

Alex Gidman (29) gave Mitchell further support in a third-wicket stand of 58 before he edged Wheal.
