ACADEMY Coach Elliot Wilson has revealed that paceman George Scrimshaw would have been the sixth Worcestershire player to earn an England Under-19 call-up this summer - but for an untimely infected toe.

Scrimshaw, who has signed his first professional contract with the County, was called-up for the second Test versus Sri Lanka Under-19s at Northampton.

It would have meant him joining up with Worcestershire colleagues Ollie Westbury, Josh Dell, Zen Malik and Ben Twohig - with Josh Tongue having been ruled out with a back injury.

But instead Scrimshaw had to spend the day of his call-up in hospital.

Wilson explained: "What a lot of people don't realise is that George Scrimshaw had a call-up to go and play for England Under-19s this summer.

"Unfortunately, the day he got called up, he ended up in hospital with an infected toe for several hours so he missed out on his opportunity which was a shame."

But Wilson has been delighted with the amount of cricket Scrimshaw has played this summer after previous injury setbacks.

He said: "The most pleasing thing about George is, after three years of injuries and operations on his shoulder and ankle and playing very little cricket, he got through a lot of cricket this summer.

"That amount of cricket, that workload, was important for us to see and he has done that very well and I'm delighted he and Ollie Westbury have got their first professional contracts."

Worcestershire expect to announce their 2016-2017 academy intake within the next two weeks.
