DIRECTOR of cricket Steve Rhodes says Worcestershire will be “wary of an improving Glamorgan side” when the two counties clash in tomorrow’s Specsavers County Championship encounter at New Road (11am).

Worcestershire romped to an eight-wicket win inside seven sessions in their opening match of the campaign at the SWALEC Stadium.

But Glamorgan registered their first Division Two win of the season against Durham at Swansea under new four-day captain Michael Hogan who has replaced Jacques Rudolph.

Rhodes said: “We are wary of an improving Glamorgan side who have just had a victory.

“They have had a change of captain which interestingly brought a positive result - as happened with Sussex against us after they changed their captain (Chris Nash for Luke Wright).

“We’ve got to make sure we are ready for a tougher challenge than what we had at the SWALEC.

“I know they are going to be a better team. We know if we are going to take the points and win then it is going to be hard work.”

Worcestershire’s 100% start in the Championship of four victories ended with the innings hammering against Sussex.

But Rhodes reiterated the decision on the toss - opting to bowl first - was a crucial factor in their downfall and will be happy if Worcestershire show the same fight against Glamorgan.

He said: “In making that decision, possibly the area we should have looked at a little bit deeper was how much the wicket would go up and down.

“We knew the wicket would go sideways initially but how long that would last, we weren’t sure but, more importantly, would that wicket go up and down?

“Probably, when we looked at it, we should have realised the answer was ‘yes’ and it should have outweighed our decision.

“It wasn’t just Joe’s decision. We took this altogether, we all take responsibility for the decision. Some of the senior players were consulted as well as myself and Matt Mason.

“Sussex were going to do the same, they fancied the ball nibbling around, but what neither side realised was amount of up and down movement we were going to get in the last two days.

“That last day was quite dangerous but we are not using that as any excuse whatsoever. We actually fought so hard in both innings.

“After the openings were parted in the first innings, we lost wickets quickly which wasn’t ideal. However, we did fight and push them all the way and we knew the rain was coming in and we were only half an hour away so that was sad for us.”
