Aussies soak up McGrath tips

AS the Ashes road leads to Cardiff this week, battle plans for the first Test were drawn up in Worcester over the weekend.

The England selection panel met at New Road on Saturday before naming the squad to take on the Aussies yesterday at Old Trafford.

While, Australia, who drew their warm-up match with the England Lions at County HQ, gleaned advice from ex-Worcestershire star Glenn McGrath.

The Aussie quick was in town and met up with his former bowling partner Brett Lee, who took six first innings wickets, and the rest of the Baggy Green attack and handed out a bit of advice.

“I am hoping to help these younger guys,” Lee said. “I had a real good chat with Glenn the other night.

He offered his advice as he was floating through Worcester and we bled him as much as we could.

“The boys were like sponges around him and so we should be.

“The guy has been an amazing player of the game, 563 Test wickets.

“It blows my mind how a fast bowler can be around that long and take that amount of wickets.

“Myself and a few of the guys went to dinner with him and asked why was he was so successful in bowling over here.

“He has been fantastic for us, gave us a pep talk, a couple of things to work on and a few things he said helped me out.

“Everyone was there. He has been a great of the game and it would be silly if you were to miss that catch-up.”
