ALEXEI Kervezee’s high-class batting display ensured Worcestershire took complete control of the LV= County Championship Division Two match against Surrey.

The Holland international fired a wonderful century — his third of the season — off just 103 balls as he cruised past 1,000 championship runs for the campaign.

The 20-year-old, who signed for the New Road side in 2006, played a typically-aggressive innings as Worcestershire piled on 190 runs between lunch and tea with the Dutchman scoring 98 of them.

Kervezee went into the match needing just 45 runs to become the County’s second player to reach the 1,000-run landmark this term — joining captain Daryl Mitchell.

His eighth-wicket partnership with Gareth Andrew (34) of 74 runs came off just 61 balls and highlighted the hosts’ intent to set a big target.

It could have be so different, though. Opener Dave Wheeldon was trapped lbw on the fourth ball of the day without adding to his overnight score of seven to Chris Tremlett as the County slumped to 63-4.

Vikram Solanki fell in the former England quick’s next over, before Mitchell was bowled by a fine delivery from ex-Worcestershire vice-captain Gareth Batty for 16.

Batty, who enjoyed his role as the pantomime villain, removed Moeen Ali for 22 and also claimed the wicket of Andrew.

Tremlett bagged his third victim after lunch when Shakib Al Hasan edged behind to Steve Davies, while James Cameron got an inside-edge on to his stumps for 17 and Ben Cox was bowled by Matthew Spriegel for 13.

But this day was all about Kervezee, who was eventually bowled by Tremlett for 144 as Worcestershire posted a lead of 368.

Shakib struck three times in eight balls late in the day, while Andrew dismissed opener Arun Harinath to leave Surrey 66-4 at the close.
