DIRECTOR of basketball Paul James believes Worcester Wolves still have plenty of room for improvement.

Back-to-back victories against Leeds Force and Surrey United have kept Wolves third in the British Basketball League with just one defeat from five matches.

But, despite their positive results, James admits it is taking time to get the best out of his new-look side.

He said: “Alex Owumi had a great game against Leeds and Chavis Holmes played well. The others did OK but there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

“I am still searching for that consistency so that when I am making substitutions, the level of play doesn’t drop. Against Leeds it was much better.

“We are still a long way off where I want us to be, certainly defensively because I don’t think we’ve found that combination that will totally shut the opposition down.

“I think there’s still a bit of frustration among the team because we feel that we’re not firing on all cylinders yet.

“But we’re winning and I’d rather that than playing well and losing games.

“We’re doing enough to win games and the one against Leeds was probably the best we’ve played, particularly in the second-half, all season.”

Owumi scored 33 points as Wolves won 98-69 at Leeds last Friday, earning him his first selection in the BBL team of the week.

He scored six out of six from the three-point line to become Wolves’ all-time leader in triples, as well as contributing four rebounds.

James added: “I thought we started off the first quarter quite well and showed our dominance. Leeds got into it more and had scored 42 points by half-time which is way too many.

“But I thought we did a tremendous job in the second-half defensively. We kept them down to 26 points which is a fantastic effort.”

Owumi is joined the select quintet by Mike Dinunno and Demond Watt of Cheshire Phoenix, Manchester Giants’ Darren Best and Pavol Losonsky from Leicester, with Holmes on the bench.
