JAY Couisnard says he is happy to be the “grandpa” of the Worcester Wolves team as he bids to help his side experience the thrill of playing on the biggest stages.

The 28-year-old is not the oldest member of the Wolves squad but, having won the treble with Leicester Riders and played in Europe, the American knows his experience is a valuable asset.

“Javier (Mugica) calls me abuelo, meaning grandpa (in Spanish),” said Couisnard, who has made over 100 appearances in the British Basketball League. “But with age comes wisdom and I have definitely got smarter on and off the court as I’ve got older.”

In 2013, the 6ft 6in forward clinched the BBL Cup, BBL and play-off final with Leicester. Couisnard then played for La Rochelle in France before arriving in Worcester in the summer.

He believes Wolves have a chance of doing something similar as they head into their BBL Trophy semi-final second leg against Newcastle Eagles tomorrow with a seven-point deficit to overturn.

“We have got a chance to win as much silverware as any other team in the league right now,” he said.

“It is a long shot to win three as far as the league is concerned as Newcastle and Leicester are playing pretty well and have a few games in hand on us. But we still have an opportunity to win two trophies for sure.”

Couisnard said he expected excitement to build as the season reached its climax and insisted it was important Wolves captain Pavol Losonsky and Jordan Dawes, who were also part of Leicester’s treble-winning side, helped the less experienced players.

“It’s going to be a great experience for some of the guys who have never been in big championship games,” he said. “There is probably only me, Pavol and Jordan who have played in finals and play-offs. I can’t wait for the young guys to experience it as it is a great feeling.

“Those moments are hard to come by, so hopefully we can get that far and the younger guys will be able to see and feel the excitement of those types of games.

“But we just have to try and give them the heads up and tell them how fun it is to play in such big games and the excitement your family gets back home witnessing you playing on television.

“We are all looking forward to it and it would be great if we could make it.”
