HEAD coach Paul James has warned captain Marek Klassen not to “try to do it all” when he faces former club Leeds Force tonight (7.30pm).

The 24-year-old point guard returns to Carnegie Sports Centre for the first time since his summer move to Worcester Wolves.

James admitted Klassen’s history with Leeds, where he averaged 17.7 points and 8.1 assists per game last season, added “spice” to the British Basketball League encounter.

However, he insisted it was important the Canadian focused on “controlling the tempo of the game” and helping towards a “team performance”.

“I guess it does add a bit of spice but Marek has got to be careful that he then doesn’t overplay and try to do it all himself,” he said.

“We have got a lot of weapons and I think, if he overplays, the next person will do it and all of a sudden it is not great for the team.

“We have got to go up there and put in a team performance.”

Klassen averages an impressive 7.8 assists per game and James said he would play a key role in eighth-placed Wolves’ bid to beat Force.

“Marek has got to control the tempo of the game, the pace and get people involved like he is very good at doing,” he said.

“He can’t get involved in too many things and think, ‘This is my old club, I want to put one over them by myself'."

Wolves seek to end a run of four successive defeats and secure their first win since beating Manchester Giants 91-84 in late October.

Leeds have also struggled for form, having lost six of their first eight games of the season to slump to 11th in the table.

But, with Force having been edged out 91-86 by leaders Newcastle Eagles last weekend, James is wary of the threat they pose.

“They have struggled when you look at their results but they are performing to their maximum right now,” he said.

“They ran Newcastle pretty close at the weekend as they led for most of that game only to fall in the last few minutes.

“Hopefully, we will be better tonight than we were last week and start off this winning sequence we have been chasing.”

James is hopeful of having small forward Andrew Bachman back available after missing Wolves’ last three games with a rib injury.

“Andrew is desperate to come back,” he said. “He is the kind of guy who hates sitting out of training or missing games.

“He always gives it his all so for him to have to sit it out for a couple of weeks is not doing his mind-set any good.

“He has been doing light sessions this week but hopefully he will be good to go tonight.”
