WORCESTER Wolves are wary of a Bristol Flyers backlash tonight (7.30pm) at the University of Worcester Arena after “embarrassing” them in their last meeting.

Head coach Paul James believes visiting Bristol will use their 88-56 defeat at Wolves two weeks ago as a source of “motivation”.

However, he is “confident” Worcester can claim a third successive win in the British Basketball League if they maintain their “defensive intensity”.

“That was the first time where we have had a team down and kept them there, so I was delighted with that and the overall team performance,” he said.

“I thought we were excellent defensively and probably the best we have been all season long.

“Offensively we shared the ball as well and had five or six guys in double figures, so any time we can have that defence along with the offence we are going to be very tough.

“But we are going to prepare for them as if we hadn’t played them.”

While Wolves were not in competition action, Bristol responded superbly last weekend with an impressive 96-79 victory over Leeds Force. The win ended a run of 11 straight defeats.

“I think they will be confident with the win they have got, but also we embarrassed them a little bit in front of the TV cameras last time out, so they will want to make amends for that,” James continued.

“That is going to be their motivation.

“Our motivation is to make sure that actually we have done it once we want to show that we can be consistent and do it again.

“I think both teams are going to be very motivated for this game for very different reasons.”

He added: “Their new player (Aaron Cosby) had an excellent weekend as he shot the ball extremely well, so we are going to look at what he does and make sure that we take away that strength.

“But as long as we come and play with that defensive intensity that we had in the last match and that togetherness in all areas I think it will be two more points up for grabs.”

Wolves forward Maurice Walker will be aiming to reach double figures in points and rebounds for the fifth match on the bounce.

And James said his seventh-placed team were feeling refreshed after having a fortnight to prepare for their clash against the basement side.

“Everyone is in good shape as we had an excellent week of practice,” he said.

”It has been intense and things are looking good now, so hopefully we can put on another show and send our fans home happy.”
