ALEX Navajas will be looking to lead Worcester Wolves to BBL Cup glory after being named captain for Sunday’s showdown with Cheshire Phoenix (3.30pm).

The well-respected Spaniard has been skippering Wolves since Ashton Khan’s surprise departure last month and has helped to keep the club on their impressive run of form.

Worcester have yet to announce a new club captain, but James felt Navajas was the best man to do the job in the interim.

The 31-year-old power forward will become only the second player to skipper Wolves in a final as he follows in the footsteps of Alex Owumi who lifted the BBL Trophy and BBL Play-off crowns in 2014.

“Alex will be our captain,” James said.

“He has done well in that role since Ashton left and he’s the most senior player that we have got at the club having been here for a couple of years now.

“The players respect him and they listen to him so I cannot see beyond Alex at this moment in time.”

Wolves have won 12 of their last 13 games in all competitions and James said he was reluctant to make changes to his in-form team for the final.

George Beamon has been selected in this week’s BBL’s All Star Five with Trayvon Palmer named off the bench. Beamon’s recognition comes after producing 23 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in Wolves’ 109-75 win over Manchester Giants last Friday.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” James said.

“We are in a rhythm now with our rotations, but it’s still debatable, so will see what happens for the rest of the week.”

Excitement is building at the club ahead of the final at the Arena Birmingham where Wolves are set to play in front of 10,000 spectators.

But James has urged his players to keep their feet on the ground and prepare as they would normally do for a game.

“You get to a place for a reason so the less you complicate things or bring new things in the better,” James said.

“It is not a case where we are looking to change things or start looking at different offences or different sets.

“We have got to do what we have been doing because that’s been very successful for us.

“We will look at Cheshire just as we would any other game and will look at the things that we can do better against them both offensively and defensively.

“But generally we try to keep everything else as normal as possible.

“Around the club and in Worcester people are really excited.

“We are excited too, but we have got to keep our feet on the ground.

“We will just enjoy training this week, work hard and make sure that everybody is fully aware of what we need to do come Sunday against Cheshire.”
