DIRECTOR of rugby Dean Ryan was extremely disappointed with Worcester Warriors’ opening 30 minutes in their 36-17 win at Yorkshire Carnegie.

Warriors made a slow start at Headingley and found themselves 14-0 down after half-an-hour.

“We are very disappointed because, emotionally, we got it wrong in the first half-an-hour,” said Ryan.

“It was disappointing because we didn’t have anything for the first half-hour which makes you have to dig much deeper as a side.

“Full credit to the lads for the second-half — we got a lot of unanswered points but we shouldn’t have to dig ourselves back from 14-0 down.

“We lacked snap and we didn’t manage our emotional preparation in the right way and, to be fair to Yorkshire, they started in a much better place than us. Irrespective of the score, we wanted to start better than that — we didn’t get it right.

“We are not happy with it and it might seem a little smug after 36-17 but we are not happy with that performance at all.”

Ryan also admitted that the final scoreline didn’t reflect the closeness of the contest.

“The final scoreline reflected the last 20 minutes’ dominance and probably field position dominance but it didn’t reflect the game and it didn’t give credit for what the home side did for half-an-hour which put us in a hole.

“In terms of the contest, Yorkshire were in a much better place than us and they deserve credit for that."

After trailing 14-0 deep in the first-half, Ryan acknowledged that Warriors reverted to their catch-and-drive set-play which went on to yield two tries.

“We are trying to get away from it because it’s not being refereed very well,” the Warriors chief said.

“We are trying to play more rugby and take the ball off the top of the line-out.

“We have talked about our frustrations with officials relating to the drive area week in week out and we are doing everything we can to get this noticed.”
