A BRACE of tries from flanker Sam Lewis guided Worcester Warriors to a 38-15 win tonight over London Scottish and a place in the Greene King IPA Championship play-off final.

Leading 27-22 from the first leg, Warriors conceded an early try and lost full-back Ben Howard through injury but found their feet to power past Scottish in the semi-final second leg at Sixways.

Warriors led just 13-8 at half-time but scored two quick-fire tries after the interval — one stemming from Cooper Vuna’s brilliance — to set up a shoot-out with Bristol or Rotherham Titans.

Worcester’s triumph was built on their forward power with Val Ruskin, Gus Creevy and Nick Schonert all outstanding.

Ryan Lamb had a fine game at fly-half, kicking 18 points, and scrum-half Jean-Baptiste Bruzulier looked sharp throughout.

A mistake from Howard led to Scottish’s shock opening try in the eighth minute. His spill allowed Scottish to gain a five-metre scrum from which Matt Williams dotted down in the corner.

Howard appeared to take a bang on the head and was replaced by Tom Biggs.

Lamb’s penalty got the hosts on the board and Warriors won another penalty from a Scottish line-out and Lamb’s second shot at goal put Worcester 6-5 in front.

The forwards kept the home side on the front foot and Warriors got the reward after driving Scottish’s scrum back at their own put-in.

Lamb kicked the resulting penalty to the corner and Lewis got the final touch when Warriors drove Scottish from the line-out.

Lamb’s conversion stretched Worcester’s lead but the hosts were caught off-side. Peter Lydon’s well-struck penalty reduced arrears to 13-8.

Warriors made a dream start to the second period and Dean Hammond raced under the posts within a minute of the restart after a moment of magic from Vuna. Lamb converted.

Warriors increased their advantage to 25-8 when skipper Gerrit-Jan Van Velze was driven over from a line-out.

Scottish looked in deep trouble but a mistake from Ryan Mills gifted the visitors a soft try.

The centre attempted to kick the ball over Lydon only for the full-back to gather and run 15 metres to the try line. Lydon’s conversion cut Worcester’s lead to 25-15.

But Warriors turned the screw after another mighty driving maul was halted illegally by the visitors.

Lamb kicked the resulting penalty to the corner and Lewis got on the end of a driven line-out. Lamb’s conversion kicked Warriors 32-15 ahead.

Two late penalties from Lamb wrapped up Warriors’ impressive success and they even had time to bring on teenage scrum-half Jamie Shillcock for his debut towards the end.
