CHARLIE Mulchrone’s switch to Harlequins will allow him to “extenuate his strengths” and “probably hide some of his weaknesses,” according to Worcester Warriors boss Dean Ryan.

The Sixways chief admitted he was “sad” Warriors weren’t able to get the best out of the scrum-half but believes Quins will suit Mulchrone’s style of play.

Ryan likened Mulchrone’s situation to hooker Dave Ward, who had limited opportunities at Bath, Northampton Saints and Sale Sharks before slotting in at Quins.

“I have spoken at length with Charlie and, for him to be successful in the Premiership, Quins is probably the best model for him to do that,” said Ryan.

“It allows him to extenuate his strengths and probably hide some of his weaknesses.

“They can play a run-at-first-opportunity game which suits him where we probably can’t as we have to be more pragmatic and we need a better kicking game and that’s sometimes the difference."

Mulchrone ended his Warriors career with a 29-minute appearance in Saturday’s 43-19 Aviva Premiership defeat against Saracens.

The 27-year-old made only one start for Warriors in the Premiership last season, when he was hauled off at half-time at Wasps, and 11 appearances from the bench.

Mulchrone made 25 appearances in his maiden campaign at Warriors and pushed Jonny Arr for the starting spot as they clinched promotion from the Championship.

The former Rotherham skipper will link up with his new club in the summer.

Ryan said: “We are all sad that we weren’t able to get the best out of Charlie here but there’s not any situation we can really change.

“We have gone down the Francois Hougaard route which is a very different approach at nine and I genuinely wish Charlie well.

“It’s a very similar situation to Dave Ward where he didn’t make it at a couple of clubs but then made it at Quins because of the philosophy of the way they play and that could be the same for Charlie.

“It’s not a criticism of Charlie not making here, it’s just tailoring the type of person you are to a club which priorities certain things. I think it could be quite a good move for Charlie.”
