WORCESTER Warriors scrum-half Francois Hougaard has missed out on selection for South Africa's rugby sevens 12-man squad for next month's Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

The 28-year-old is a reserve for the Springboks and will be travelling to Rio but  staying outside the official Olympic village.

Rugby Sevens has been included in the Olympics for the first time in 92 years with the men’s tournament from August 9 until 11.

“It was really tough finalising the 12-man squad presented to South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC),” said Springbok Sevens coach Neil Powell.

“I could have picked three different teams and all would have been very competitive, but unfortunately, only 12 can go.

"We have named Francois Hougaard and Chris Dry as back-up players that will travel to Rio as well, but they will be staying outside the official village."

“I want to thank all 23 players that contributed this year and the final 19 who really worked hard towards a common goal. That said, we are not done yet and will have to work hard in the remaining 20 days or so to fine-tune our play."

The Springboks begin their Olympic tournament against minnows Spain on August 9 and face France in their second pool match later that day.

South Africa meet Australia in their third pool match and will be aiming for the knockout stages in Brazil, which conclude with the final on August 11.

Hougaard, who has won 35 Test caps for the Springboks, played nine times for Warriors after arriving at Sixways in February.

The Springbok Sevens team who will compete as part of Team SA: Kyle Brown (captain), Tim Agaba, Philip Snyman, Werner Kok, Dylan Sage, Kwagga Smith, Rosko Specman, Cheslin Kolbe, Cecil Afrika, Justin Geduld, Juan de Jongh, Seabelo Senatla.

Travelling reserves: Chris Dry, Francois Hougaard.
