ROOKIE full-back Perry Humphreys felt “awesome” after scoring a sensational maiden Aviva Premiership try for Worcester Warriors.

The 21-year-old scorched down the left flank to leave Gloucester speedster Charlie Sharples on the deck as he crashed over in the 57th minute of the M5 derby.

Experienced full-back Chris Pennell, who is recovering from a neck injury, was among the first people to congratulate Humphreys after the final whistle as the match finished 23-23.

And it’s not the first time Humphreys has shown agility, speed and awareness to send the Sixways supporters into ecstasy.

Humphreys gathered a high ball and raced 45 metres to the line to score a stunning late try in Warriors’ 15-13 home win against Leinster A in the British and Irish Cup semi-final in March 2015.

He came on for fellow try-scorer Ben Te’o (head injury) in Friday’s match and ironically the England squad centre was on the field for Leinster in that cup match 18 months ago.

Humphreys, who came on as a late replacement in Warriors’ opening-day Premiership defeat to Saracens, made a telling break with his first intervention against Gloucester.

“I saw Ben go out with the doctor (at half-time) so I went out to warm up and they told me on the radio I could be coming on, so I didn’t have time to think about it,” said Humphreys.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better first touch – I was pretty nervous but that got me into the game well and I was happy after that."

And the youngster broke through to put Warriors 20-9 up just five minutes after flanker Alafoti Fa’osiliva had been shown a red card for dangerous play.

Recalling his try, Humphreys said: “It all happened so quickly.

“I saw Sharples, who is quite a quick player, and I didn’t know whether I would get around him but I did in the end “It was awesome and as soon as I scored in the corner everyone jumped on me and it was an unreal feeling. I was happy to get my first Premiership try.”

The Lincoln-born back joined the Warriors academy from Leicester Tigers in 2014.

He has awaited his opportunity in the first team after appearing for the Cavaliers and making a couple of appearances last term in the European Challenge Cup.

“I have had a bit of luck due to a few injuries to other players,” he said.

“I don’t mind where I play – I quite like 15 because it’s a bit more responsibility but I don’t mind playing on the wing as well.

“We have got a world-class back three with Penns (Chris Pennell) and Bryce (Heem) so I have just got to take my opportunities while they are there because there’s no doubt those guys will be back in the mix when they are fit.”

He added: “After the match, Penns said he was very proud of me and it was very nice coming from him because he’s someone I look up to.”
