ENGLAND squad centre Ben Te’o is a major doubt for Worcester Warriors’ trip to Bath after suffering concussion in the Aviva Premiership derby with Gloucester.

The 29-year-old crossed for his maiden try on his home debut in Worcester’s 23-23 draw last Friday watched by England head coach Eddie Jones.

But Te’o was replaced at half-time after a bang on the head and Warriors will have to “wait and see” whether he recovers in time for Saturday’s trip to the Recreation Ground (3pm).

Skipper Gerrit-Jan van Velze (concussion) is “unlikely” to be available and Warriors are hoping prop Nick Schonert will be back “in the next couple of weeks”. Both missed the match last Friday.

Full-back Chris Pennell (neck) is still “three or four weeks” away from a return and wing Bryce Heem’s knee problem is taking longer to heal than Warriors had hoped.

Head coach Carl Hogg says there will be “one or two enforced changes” to the squad who picked up their first points of the season in the stalemate against the Cherry and Whites.

“Ben has concussion after a head knock so he’s following the protocol for returning to play,” said Hogg.

“We are hoping he will be available but we will have to wait and see.”

Hogg explained players who have taken a blow to the head must be free of concussion symptoms “six days before a game” to be eligible for selection.

“The players have to be symptom-free six days out from a match,” said Hogg.

“If they are, then they will have a progressive step-up before moving into contact.

“There is a staged progression for a player be fully integrated back into the group.”

Should Te’o be ruled out, Jackson Willison is likely to partner Wynand Olivier in the midfield with Perry Humphreys slotting in at full-back where he starred after coming on last week.

Captain van Velze, who wears the number eight shirt, suffered concussion during Warriors’ opening-day defeat against Saracens.

“GJ is progressing but unlikely to be available for the weekend,” said Hogg.

“He is a fantastic leader and skipper but we are very fortunate to have someone like Phil Dowson with his experience and his emotional leadership to lead the group.

“We are hoping Nick (Schonert) will be back in the next couple of weeks.

“He hyper-extended his elbow against Saracens and we are hoping to get him back in the near future.”

James Johnston was superb against Gloucester in the place of Schonert and drew special praise from Hogg for his display.

“James scrummaged particularly well on Friday night against a good Gloucester front row,” said Hogg.

“Scrummaging is not something you can pick up and put down. The more you scrum the better you become and James was excellent against Gloucester.”
