WING Andy Short has lauded Sam Vesty’s “modern-day” coaching techniques, saying he “lets the shackles go” at Worcester Warriors.

Backs coach Vesty has been elevated to manage Warriors during this season’s European Challenge Cup campaign.

Worcester lost their Pool B opener 19-12 against Russian-side Enisei-STM at the Slava Stadium in Moscow on Saturday.

But Short says he has been relishing working under Vesty, who handed the Worcester-born back his first senior appearance in nearly nine months at the weekend.

“Sam is a great modern-day coach who has been there and done it himself,” Short said.

“He lets the shackles go from a backs perspective and that’s what you want.

“You want to be able to run with ball in hand and try things out. Obviously, it puts onus on yourself to make the right decision but he’s great to work with.”

Vesty played for Leicester Tigers and Bath and won two caps for England before hanging up his boots in 2013.

The 34-year-old joined Warriors as academy transition manager and was promoted to backs coach in 2015.

Short said Vesty had a “similar” style to Matt Sherratt, who the 25-year-old worked with when he was coming through the ranks at Warriors.

Since leaving Worcester in 2011, Sherratt has gone on to work at Bristol and Cardiff Blues before being called up to join Rob Howley’s Wales coaching team.

“Sam is similar to Matt as his philosophies and styles of coaching are quite refreshing,” Short added.

“It helps the players to do things themselves, which helps them get better.”

Warriors look to bounce back when they take on Top 14 outfit Brive at Sixways on Saturday (3pm).

Vesty said he had enjoyed the responsibility of overseeing the side in Europe while head coach Carl Hogg took a step back.

“I am having to step up and do a little more but not an awful lot has changed,” he said.

“I still use Hoggy’s guidance and it’s still the same group of coaches, so we know how to run things.

“But it’s nice to get the opportunity to get my voice heard a bit more.”
