TEENAGER Jamie Shillcock will look to improve his execution from fly-half, according to backs coach Sam Vesty.

The 19-year-old academy starlet made his bow at fly-half for Warriors in their 19-12 defeat last Saturday against Russian outfit Enisei-STM.

Shillcock has missed just eight minutes of action since breaking into Warriors’ starting line-up at full-back for their Aviva Premiership trip to Bath last month.

He left the field momentarily in Moscow after taking a bang on the head but returned after passing the injury assessment.

Warriors are in European Challenge Cup action again tomorrow against French Top 14 outfit Brive at Sixways (3pm)

“Shilly is a great fly-half and I think he’s going to have a very good future playing at fly-half,” said Vesty, who is in charge of Worcester’s European campaign.

“He made lots of good decisions (against Enisei-STM) and perhaps he didn’t execute them as well as he would have liked.

“He didn’t because we’ve had this conversation and that’s what he told me.

“But there are lots of extenuating circumstances.

“He hadn’t played fly-half for well over a year and he hadn’t trained there with us since the start of pre-season to allow him to do a good job at full-back.

“When you jump straight back into such a pivotal position (fly-half) you’re not going to fall straight on to the running machine and keep up.

“But he did very well out there but with perhaps a couple of execution errors he will look to improve.”

Former Bath and Leicester Tigers star Vesty believes the former Warwick School pupil has “one of the best left feet” he’s seen and could grow into a reliable kicker.

“There is not a goal-kicker in the world who doesn’t work on their goal-kicking,” said Vesty.

“Shilly has one of the best left feet I’ve seen – and I’ve seen some good ones.

“His goal-kicking is something which, hopefully, will come to the fore.”
