RYAN Bower believes preparation is key after making his unexpected first Aviva Premiership start as Warriors defeated English and European champions Saracens.

The loosehead prop was drafted in to play at the last minute after fellow looseheads Val Rapava Ruskin and Ryan Grant failed late fitness tests.

And he admitted there were a few pre-match nerves when he was called up to start against the league's high-flyers.

He said: "I had a call on Friday advising me to be ready just in case and then on Saturday I found out I was starting.

"Obviously I was quite nervous because it was to be my first Premiership start and especially as there was no specialist cover on the bench. I'm not sure James Johnston has played there before.

""I was just happy to play. I always make sure I know the plays in case anything happens and I was fortunate enough to get my chance.”

Bower admitted a helping of bacon and eggs and a few words from the coaches helped him ahead of the big game.

He continued: "I came in on the morning and had some bacon and eggs and was just thinking about giving everything in that first scrum, and then taking it from there.

"Mefin Davies gave me a few words about the scrum and the coaches told me to take my opportunity.

"Saracens have a very good pack and they've shown what they can do across multiple competitions.

"It was an enjoyable contest in the scrum and we can take plenty of positives away from it.”

Bower also praised the crowd who created a fervent atmosphere at Sixways in helping Warriors across the line against the champions.

He explained: "The fans were huge and Donncha (O'Callaghan) helped gee up the crowd when he went off.

"When you hear the cheers it really spurs you on in that final ten minutes and they certainly played their part in that victory.”

Bower admitted he received plenty of positive feedback after the contest and is hoping he gets the nod again for another big battle against Exeter Chiefs on Saturday at Sixways (3pm).

He added: "My family came to watch and were really happy for me. I had a few text messages come through and it was nice to hear some of the comments from fans after the game. It's great to see them happy.

"We'll see what happens this week whether any of the other guys come back but hopefully I've shown I'm always ready if another chance comes my way."
