WING Dean Hammond is determined to hit the headlines again as he looks to inspire Worcester Warriors to a memorable European Challenge Cup triumph at Brive tomorrow (2.30pm GMT).

Back in November, Hammond was the talk of the city after scoring a hat-trick in Warriors’ 45-37 defeat at Harlequins in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

But the 25-year-old has not crossed the whitewash since that day while Josh Adams has been scoring tries for fun.

Hammond said he was delighted to see Adams’ form result in him being called up by Wales and Perry Humphreys chip in with a brace in Warriors’ 24-24 draw with Connacht last weekend.

But the South African, who has notched six tries in 10 games this term, reckons the time has come for to him to regain the spotlight as he bids to end his barren run.

“If one guys steps in, plays well and takes his opportunities he is going to get all the headlines,” Hammond said.

“It’s great that Josh is playing well, scoring a lot of tries and contributing to the team in a positive way.

“So hopefully when I get my chance I can do exactly the same for the team.

“If everyone does their job extremely well then the opportunities always come your way.

“We play a way where we give chances to the back three to score tries.

“I suppose I am due one. Against Connacht it all went down the other wing and it was a bit more about being dogged down my side.

“But it was great for Perry to get over a couple of times as we needed those tries and he deserved them.”

As things stand, Warriors are one of the three best-placed runners up but with Stade Français, Sale Sharks and Brive on their coattails the Sixways side will need a win to guarantee their place in the quarter-final.

Hammond was in the Worcester side who were edged out 17-14 in Brive following a last-gasp penalty from Gaetan Germain last season.

But the explosive back believes that experience will benefit his team as they try to see off the Top 14 outfit at Stade Amédée-Domenech.

“We weren’t far off beating them out there last season so we just have to go one better this time,” Hammond said.

“A lot of the guys have played out there before so that definitely helps as you know what to expect.

“Whenever you go to France they play with a lot of confidence and usually it’s a great atmosphere.

“But we need to impose our game on them and stick to our strengths which is our attacking game.

“It’s going to be a physical encounter as they’ve got some big boys but we can always match up to them.

“Winning this game has been the only thing on our mind.

“We go into every match looking to win but with the incentive of going through to the quarter-finals as well this would be massive for us.”
