OLLIE Lawrence underlined his burgeoning potential with a stunning showing in Worcester Cavaliers’ 52-21 victory over Sale Jets at Sixways.

The 18-year-old centre had a hand in many of Cavaliers’ tries as the hosts crossed the whitewash eight times in the Premiership Rugby A-League clash.

His midfield partner Will Butler and wing Tom Howe bagged braces while Alex Hearle, Nick David and Matt Cox also went over.

Lawrence who has recently been involved with England U18s and U20s then rounded off the home triumph with a well-deserved try late on.

Academy backs coach Gordon Ross said: “It is always great to see Ollie back in a Worcester jersey.

“Perhaps we don’t see enough of him but when we do he makes a good contribution.

“There are guys around him that are doing good work and making him look better than he is sometimes.

“But he is a young kid who is going in the right direction.”

Lawrence has featured three times for the first-team this season after marking his debut with a try against Sale Sharks in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

“If he keeps his head screwed on and works on his core skills, he’ll hopefully have a really bright future in the game,” Ross added.

“There are a few things that he needs to work on, but he did a lot of good things on Monday night.

“As long as he strives to get better every week then hopefully he will do well next year when he comes into the full-time environment.

“But he is a good kid with an outstanding skillset.”

Recent recruits Dorian Jones and Grayson Hart teamed up at half-back before being replaced at half-time with Cavaliers leading 19-7.

Ross said he was pleased to see fly-half Jones and scrum-half Hart showcase their skills but was keen to highlight the “outstanding” performance of young skipper Butler.

“They are both experienced players and ran the game very well in the first half,” Ross said.

“But I thought Will at 19 years old showed really good leadership qualities and helped those guys immensely.

“Will has come on hugely this year. He maybe did not get as much game-time as he would have wanted for England U20s.

“But he has come back to Worcester, worked extremely hard and put in three outstanding performances.”

Butler struck twice in quick succession to send Cavaliers on their way. His first came on 11 minutes when he darted over before grabbing a second when he was teed up by Lawrence. Jones got on the board with two conversions.

Hooker Cameron Neild got one back for Sale which Charlie Reed converted but Worcester notched another try moments later.

This time, Lawrence and Butler combined to set up Hearle who burst down his flank to score in the corner.

After a thrilling patch of scoring the match settled down before Charlie Pozniak was sin-binned for a delibrate knock-on at the start of the second half.

Worcester soon made numerical advantage count as Lawrence flicked the ball to Howe who finished out wide. Sam Olver landed the difficult conversion.

Sale hit back with their second converted score when Matt Postlethwaite powered over but Cavaliers responded thanks to some more brilliance from Lawrence.

The Bromsgrove School student popped the ball out of the back of his hand to David who released Howe for his double.

Lawrence then showed pace to send Worcester on the attack and composure to set up David for his try which Olver improved.

Jets crossed for the third time when Tom Burns burrowed over and Reed kept up his 100 per cent record from the tee.

But Cavaliers wrapped things up with two converted tries in the final 10 minutes. Cox sprinted away to score before Lawrence went over after latching onto Olver’s kick.
