The Good Nurse Award is looking to celebrate a health care professional who demonstrates an innovative and caring approach to their work.
The finalists in this award category are:
Amy Bentley
IN the running for the Good Nurse award is Amy Bentley, who said she was really surprised when she heard she had made it to the final.
The community nurse has been nominated for her work in the last year, including being the first at the scene of a serious crash on the A448 Stone in February, where she attempted to save a man’s life.
The 24-year-old from Belbroughton only qualified to be a nurse two years ago after training at the University of Worcester, and said with the pandemic it had been a tough start to her career.
But she said her work in the community, visiting patients that aren’t able to get to hospital in their own home, was very rewarding.
She added: “My mum was a nurse and after seeing the nurses at work, and the care that I received when I was ill, made me want to be a nurse.
“I work with an incredible team who have been so supportive of me - they are always working hard for the patients they care for.”
Nina Lealan
NINA Lealan from Abbottswood Medical Centre lives in Pershore.
One of the nominations for Mrs Lealen said: “Nina has spent her whole life in the health care profession. She splits her time between her team leader role and her role as Practice Nurse Clinical Lead for Herefordshire & Worcestershire CCG.
“Not only is she passionate about her patients but she in passionate about the people she works with.”
The 47-year-old said: “It is fantastic to have even been nominated, I am very humbled to be a finalist. There is a lot of good work going on across Worcestershire in general practice nursing, so it is good that is being recognised.”
Mrs Lealen said after the hard year of the pandemic it had been very rewarding to have been part of the “good work” of the vaccination programme recently. “I work with a fantastic team,” she added. “I have been chosen, but there is a team behind me which should be recognised as well.”
Yvonne Baker
YVONNE Baker said it “absolutely lovely” someone took the time to nominate her for the Good Nurse award, and was shocked to have made it to the final.
“It is overwhelming, a privilege to be nominated and even more so to get to the final,” the 57-year-old said. The midwife has been working for the NHS since 1982, after training in Northern Ireland. She worked at the Alexander Hospital before moving to Worcestershire Royal Hospital which she says has a wonderful team, working on an exceptionally busy unit.
The Bromsgrove resident said the last year had been incredibly tough with coronavirus, speaking to women who had to isolate while they were pregnant. The midwife specialises in supporting women with pelvic girdle pain during their pregnancy, a condition that affects one in five women. “It requires a lot of support emotionally to get them through the pregnancy, living with chronic pain and a growing baby - but it is very rewarding work.”
